Overview of JKAS examination.

JKAS Examination:     Jammu and Kashmir UT Service, better known as Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS), is the prestigious service in the UT of J and K. The JKAS Exam is conducted by JKPSC (Jammu Kashmir Public Services Commission) at UT level. The exam is conducted in three stages. The first stage is preliminary test (PT) which is just a screening test to allow students to sit in the next stage of examination. The next stage is Mains Examination. After qualifying this tier, the candidates are called for interview. Interview (Personality Test) is Conducted  by a panel constituted by JKPSC Chairperson and members. Final result of JKAS exam is declared after this stage. Then JKPSC send the selection list of qualified candidate to Government  Medical College Jammu and Srinagar for the medical examination of the selected candidates respectivly. After medical examination the list goes to General Administrative Department in the Secretariat of JKUT Government and lastly the J

Officer Like Qualities:


These are the qualities or trait that must be found in an officer. An officer must be gentle man, calm and cool minded, enthusiastic, energetic, curious, etc. Some of the 25 fundamental officer like qualities are discussed in detail. New aspirants of KAS examination must ensure that such qualities must be embraced sooner or later. Many people do not have all the qualities required for the particular job. Some are inbuilt but other can be incultated with time by making some efforts. If you are aspiring to be an KAS officer you must imbibe these qualties into yourself in order to become efficient officer. Lets discuss thses officer like qualities. 1. Patience. If you are patient that means you have capacity to wait, good capacity to listen and you can withstamd any public pressure. Hence you will be a good decision maker. Patience is very essential for civil servant because this job has a direct dealing with the public and you have to listen each and every person calmly. If you are not patient you will not be able deal efficiently with the public. If you find yourself impatient and want to be a civil servant then its the right time to improve your behaviour.

2. Hard Working. Person who do hard work always get success at one or the other time. Hard working person can never fail. JK Civil service examination is a game of hard work without which a candidate can not get success because it is a three tier examination. Lot of syllabus is there to qualify the Preliminary test and Mains examination. One who become an IAS or KAS officer is due to his or her hard work.
3. Smart Work. Besides the hard work a civil servant always do smart work. Smart work is doing a particular work in an innovative way. Smart work means doining only needful work and leaving junk work aside. Both hard and smart work leads to quick success. Without smart work you will waste your time and energy. So be smart worker along with hard work. Smart work is more important that hard work.

4. Patrotism. A civil servant is a patriotic person. He or she loves to work for his or her Country people. Patroism is the prime thing that a civil servant must possess. He or she should respect and recognize the sacrifice of great people in past to make this country glorified.

5. Work Ethics. Work ethics is a set of moral principles which a person uses during the execution of work. An officer must have very good work ethics. Work ethics means doing justice with the work you do. You must follow the proper guidlines, rules regulations and laws governing a particular work in order yo help the beneficiary. It also means giving importance to work, showing determination and interest in the work. Good work ethics give good productivity. Some of the principles include, punctuality, regularity, importance to work, setting and getting targets, consciousness, giving time for work. Prioratising the works, trusting subordinate staff, equal distribution of work amomg employees, etc.

6. Leadership. The quality of leadership is present in an officer. An officer is a leader of his whole staff team. He leads the team towards the targets and the goals of the office or organization. As a leader, an officer has a quality to enhance the efficiency of the other emplyees working under him or her. It leads to the achiebement of goal of the organization on time.

7. Out of the box thinking. It simply means the Creative Thinking. An officer thinks out of the box. An officer has the quality of thinking with broad mind. Thinking differently is very important for a civil servant because he or she has to face diverse kinds of the problems which can not be solved with general thinking only. One has to think with different approaches to find the real solution.

8. Habbit of reading. Reading habbit is very important during the preparation of the KAS exam in particular and after you qualify the exam in general. Reading more contents helps us not only to build a good vocabulary, learn the language, but also improve our pronunciation. You may read any content of news papers, magzines, online reading, etc. So do read newspaper at least one hour a day in order to improve your English language. Moreever reading newspapers daily also helps an officer to remain aware about the day to day heppenings of the world.

9. Good communication (skills oral and written). An officer must have good communication skill. It is not important that one should be one of the best speaker like a politician but at least one has a good power of expression. He or she must possess a quality how to present the work done by him or her. An officer has the quality of convincing the people by effective communication.

10. Honesty and Integrity. An good officer is a honest person. He or she does not compromise the honesty and integrity at any cost. Honesty and integrity is the pride of a good officer.

11. Committed. An officer is always commited to his work. An officer do not make fake promises which can not be fulfilled later on. He or she is always commited to his or her profession.

12. Having good knowldge. An officer must possess all the knowledge about the department which he or she has joined, schemes running by the government in the concerned department, rules and guidlines, acts regarding the particular schemes, etc. For gaining knowledge, officer always keep some books and other material regarding acts and guidelines. An officer always remains updated regarding all acts, guidelines, rules and amendments done time to time.

13. A Good Decision Maker. An officer is a good decision maker. He or she has a quality of making accurate and quick decision regarding the particular issue as there are many occasions when the officer has to think smartly and resolve the problem without any delay.

14. A Good Diplomat. Diplomacy is a prime chracter required by an officer. As there are different kinds of people in the society who need different approches to tackle. So an officer needs good skills of convincing one part without compromising the point of view of other one. Diplomacy plays a vital role in connecting people and maintaining peace in the society. An good officer is a good diplomat. Diplomacy is required in order to settle many types of disputes like religious, domestic, community, etc disputes in the society.

15. Discipline. An officer is well diciplined personalty. He or she shows dicipline not only in professional life but also in social as well as personal life. Dicipline include punctuality, regularity, good habbits, good behaviour, respectful, good communication, care taking of ones health, etc.

16. Good Time Manager. An officer is a good time manager. Good Time management skill is very essential part of life. A good officer do not waste time, do not keep today's work pending for tomorrow, do not take much time for silly work, do prioratise the work according to time, prepare time tables or roasters for different works, make subordinate workers to do work on time, do planing in life, wake up and sleep on time, etc. He or she understands the proverb "Time is Money" very well.

17. Curiosity. An officer is very curious to do his or her job. He or she is always curious to know about the new things, to visit new places, to interact with different people, to make new plans, etc.

18. Perseverance. An officer has a quality of doing things continuously despite various difficulties, obstacles, failures, etc to achieve a particular goal. He or she do not rest untill the final target is achieved.

19. Good control over Anger. Civil servce is providing service to the people. Our society has a diversity of people. Many people may come and show their anger upon the officer incharge at some place. The officer must take all the responses from the people easily and react very cautiously. An officer must be cool and calm.

20. Adjustible in any Area. An officer is able to adjust in every kind of geographical area. KAS officer may be deployed at any place within the territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He or she must be adjustable at any place may be it is a hilly or plan area.

21. Compassionate. An officer is compassionate which means he or she cares for other people of the society especially the downtrodden, backward or marginalized people.

22. Good Motivator. An officer us a good motivator also. He or she can motivate the subordinate officials to do a particular task.

23. Good Listener. An officer is a good listner also. He or she speaks less but listen more. Listening more is more important. If we listen to the people, we will be able yo know the problem faced by them and hence accordingly we will be able to resolve the issue mediately.

24. Keen Observer. An officer is a keen observer. He or she keenly observed each and every work. An officer also keep an eye over the subordinate emplyees in the office. And accordingly give assignment to the officials.

25. Computer Knowing. An officer at present should have the knowledge of Computer applications. If you do not know the computer, you must learn it as early as possible before you get inducted into the civil services. This is because now a days, in each department more than a half of the work is computer based and done. So possessing the knowledge of computer is now very important.

26. Initiative. An officer takes the initiative of work quaickly. He or she do not wait for others to take a start.

27. Courageous. The officer is much courageous to do any tough work. Officer who are incharge of law enforcement like Police officers (DySPs, SSPs,SPs) and Revenue Officers with magistrate power (Tehsildars, DMs) must be very courageous to handle the unforeseen law and order situations. Tehsildars and DMs has powers to enforce the IPC and hence are courageous civil officers. Similarly Police officers are even more courageous who have to hamdle lot more things related to law and order.

28. Cooperation. Officers shows much cooperation with public, any other auditing organizations, media, etc.

29. Stamina. An officer has much stamina to work day and night. Many times officer has to work even late hours and have to travel a lot for field inspections.

30. Social adaptability. An officer is a dynamic personality and easily fits in every cultural sphere of life.
