No notes for Preliminary Test

For PT you will require a thorough and detailed study of the subjects mentioned in the syllabus. GS paper 1 is based of General awareness thats syllabus is considered to be an ocean. So candidate can not study by making specific notes for PT. GS paper 2 is a CSAT which requires ample of practice of solving questions.

Which subjects in Mains need Notes writing?

Notes making is an art and this art is also required for Mains papers. Since mains papers include Four GS papers and two Optional papers. GS of mains examination  is a dynamic subject. Anything from the syllabus can be asked in the examination. So one can not limit upto notes only. One must have a general idea about the subject. Morever Notes making also require ample of Time. If you are preparing the the examination which is one or two years ahead, you have good time to make notes.

You may produce your own hand written notes for some subjects like Indian history, World History, Indian politics, Geography, etc. But subjects like Current Affairs, Current Economics, Science and Technology, apptitude and Ethics, you must possess actual basic knowledge and opinion so do not require writing notes. One can not make notes of these subjects as examinor mostly ask some logical or analytical questions which needs clear basic concepts of the topics.
Another thing is that some candidates have habbit of making notes and some study directly from books. So one who wants to make notes of some static subjects like history, geography, polity, it will be highly beneficial for them for revision of subject during the last stage of preparations.

Notes making for Current affairs, science and tech, current economics, environmental awareness, ethics and integrity is a wastage of time. Candidate must develop a general idea about the topic and it will be easy to answer a question without making a notes.

For example lets see a question from JKAS 2018 GS papers.

Q1. Use of technology in daily life in the recent times has become critical. Discuss the same indicating the positive and negative aspect of the same.

Q2. Discuss the positive and negative impacts of globalization on women in india.

Q3. The effective management of land and water resources will drastically reduces the human miseries. Explain.

Q4. Major cities are becoming more vulnerable to flood conditions. Discuss.

Q5. Digital india programme aims at inclusive growth in areas electronic services, products, manufacturing and job opportunities, substantiate this statement by indicating the efforts of Govt of India.

Such questions require thorough study of the topic and general logical thinking to answer. One can not find answers of Such questions in any book but one can answer if one has a general idea about the subject. These are the questions which every candidate answers in his or her own way depending upon how much one think and possess basic knowledge about the topic.

Now take the Optional subject like History, Geography, Botany, Zoology, Anthropology, Economics, Urdu, etc. These are the subjects you must make notes in your own hand writing. Because all the topics mentioned in the syllabus would not be found in a single book. One has to go through different books and study material in order to cover whole syllabus. So if you have enough time you can prepare notes from different sources which will benefit you during the final revision of the syllabus at one place. Otherwise revising the whole syllabus from differnt books is a bit tough job. One important thing is that do not depend on the notes prepared by another candidate.

Notes from News Paper ?

Yes you may maintain a separate notebook for noting some important points from daily newspaper. You should take and note down at maximum of 10 important points from newspaper. Only most important points which are related with the syllabus and could be asked by the examiner be noted down so that at the end you may revise whole newspaper thorugh your notes.

Why to avoid notes made by another person ?

1. The notes are not written in your own handwriting so you may face a reading problem.

2. The notes when copied from another souces may invite copy paste errors/mistakes and misspelling of words which may pose a problem later on.

3. Answer writing and notes making style of different persons is different.

4. Such notes may not have all the content which you have to add to your own notes.

5. Notes prepared by other persons may have tough vocabulary.

So avoid others notes. Prepare your won ones.

Why to make notes? Five best Reasons.

1. Easy to revise at the end.

2. Only limited content is found in notes which is more important for answering a questions.

3. Easy to read and learn in your own handwriting.

4. All content is placed in one place.

5. You may carry one complete compilation at any place. Means notes are portable.

How to Make notes? Things to remember.

1. Notes should be produced in simple language.
2. Notes should be prepared on plane pages A4 size. You may have a spiral of plan sheets.
3. You may use two or three colour pens to highlight topics, important words, etc.
4. While writing a topic, you must consult minimum 2 or 3 authentic sources/books.
5. Write topic on a rough sheet first and then read the topic and find mistakes and correct them before writing fairly.

6. After finishing the process of proof reading paste the topic content on original plane sheet.

7. Draw neat and clean diagram. Before drawing on fair sheet, practice on rough sheet. Subjects like botany, zoology, physics, chemistry anthropology, etc require duagrams also.

8. Update your notes. You may leave some space under each topic in order to add something to the topic later on.
